I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you (Psalm 32:8).
How do you follow through on the goals you set? After prayerfully seeking God’s direction and writing out what you believe are His goals for you, you need a plan to help you follow through. The key to getting the right things done is to set yourself up for success with rhythms for growth — systems that help you stay on track.
Systems have been a game-changer for me. Once I became intentional in creating systems for myself — rhythms for growth — I began to check off some of my most important God-centered goals. It wasn’t easy. It took time. But having a system for planning and reviewing my progress helped me to keep taking one step at a time.
Here are some tips for creating your own Rhythms for Growth:
1. Sunday Set-up – Set aside a few minutes on Sunday to do a quick sweep of your house and put things back in order so you can start the week fresh. Then take a few moments to look at your schedule for the upcoming week. Taking some time in advance can help alleviate those last-minute moments of panic when you suddenly remember something important is happening and realize you are not ready! Not that I’ve ever experienced that…
2. Strategic Scheduling – Something to consider is block scheduling. Try to lump similar tasks into the same time slot. That isn’t always easy to do, but you can make your time more efficient. Do all your desk work at the same time: finances, correspondence, filing. Your brain will remain focused more easily because the tasks are similar. Plan your errands to coincide with each other. You won’t have to keep running out. Get the idea?
3. Set your Top Three – Something I have found so helpful is to set my top three tasks for each day. I heard that idea on a podcast, and it has transformed the way I approach my days. When I set my top three tasks, it helps me know where to spend my energy. You and I know that our task list could be — no, IS never-ending. The top three helps me come to the end of the day knowing that I have completed something. It has been freeing because it enables me to let all the other things rest. I have already decided what is most important today. Those other items on my list will get priority treatment at another time.
To be clear, setting your top three is meant to connect back to your Big Three goals for the year. Make sure you review them regularly. That must be part of your daily or weekly system. That helps you stay on track and keeps you growing.
Accountability is another system you develop to help you stay in your Rhythm for Growth. Some questions to consider:
1. Who can you enlist to help you stay on track? We need others to hold us accountable.
2. How will you remind yourself of what you want to accomplish? An out-of-sight goal becomes an unmet goal. What kind of reminders work for you?
3. When will you remind yourself? How often do you need reminders?
So, now, my friend, it is time to make all these ideas into an actionable plan. Remember, written goals are an expression of faith. When you convert a dream into a concrete goal, you invite God into the process. Stop now and ask God to help you craft your action plan. Ask Him to help you develop some rhythms for growth. Go ahead. Take that minute to invite Him in. I am cheering you on. You can do this!
Key Question: How do I set myself up for success with systems — rhythms for growth?
A Scripture to Consider: I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you (Psalm 32:8).
A YES Challenge: Make an appointment with yourself and think through one system, one rhythm for growth, you want to put in place. Who will you invite to help you follow through on your plan?
Prayer: Father, help me remember that systems, rhythms for growth, are Your idea. Guide me as I plan and empower me to follow through on that plan. Show me who can keep me accountable. What matters most is that I follow through on Your goals for me. Help me to keep moving forward for Your honor and glory. Amen.
